What is the Internet?

Why do we need the Internet and how does it work? Let's start by explaining the essence of the Internet. Imagine two computers standing next to each other, connected by a cable, which can transmit a lot of different information between them. After connecting the computers there is a small local network of two machines.

If we imagine the possibility of such a connection of all computers in the world that exchange information with each other, we will get an Internet network - a worldwide network in which each computer is subject to a specific set of rules for exchanging information. What’s helping all this to actually work is something called Servers - special powerful computers with their own special tasks.

According to the rules of information exchange, each computer and server that is connected to the Internet is assigned its own virtual address ("IP address"), consisting of four numbers that are separated by a dot (for example, 192.128.10.70, all numbers from 0 to 255). All the information is transmitted in small pieces – called Packets. In addition to the piece of information that you are going to receive or transmit, this packet must indicate the IP address of your computer and the IP address of the recipient's computer.
