What is hosting?

Hosing is the provision of resources for placing information on a server that is constantly connected to the Internet.

Hosting is necessary in the event that the owner of a site or a certain resource does not have its own infrastructure to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the web server on which the resource is located.

Under the host, not only the allocation of space for the site's web server is understood, but also the provision of facilities for the FTP server, mail server and databases.

DNS services may not be included in the hosting service.

When choosing a host, it is necessary to check the geographic location of the server in which the service will be provided.

It will also be correct to check the following parameters when comparing offers from different companies:

• restriction of monthly traffic
  

• the number of sites that you can place under one account
  

• restricting disk storage
  

• how much disk space is allocated for the mail service and how many accounts can be registered
  

• how many databases can be used within a single account and what is the limit on disk space for databases
  

• the amount of allocated resources, such as RAM, CPU power, maximum execution time for user processes
  

There are four types of hosting, depending on the type of accommodation - virtual hosting, dedicated virtual server, dedicated server and colocation.

Virtual hosting assumes that there is a server with a software installed, and the sites that are hosted on this server use this software together. This method is the cheapest, but it is the least flexible to making changes.

Dedicated virtual server allows you to allocate an autonomous, "virtual", space in resources to each site. With this kind of hosting each site uses its own software. And if you need to make changes to this software for a particular site - it can be done without affecting other sites on this physical server.

Dedicated server is full ownership of a physical server for the needs of a certain resource or site. In this case, it means that there is no virtualization. All server disk space, all main memory, all its resources are available for use.

Colocation is the location of the customer's server in the data center of the company that provides hosting services. In this case, unlike the above hosting options, it is the customer that eliminates all the malfunctions in the server's operation, since the physical server itself belongs to them.
